Capsule Endoscopy (PillCam)
Pioneered in Connecticut by Dr. Zakko in the late 1990's, PillCam is the most widely used, patient-friendly tool for directly visualizing the small bowel to detect and monitor abnormalities. This procedure is the standard of care for small bowel evaluation, allowing physicians visualize the entire small bowel without putting their patients through a lengthy, uncomfortable procedure or having them undergo sedation. By simply swallowing a vitamin-sized capsule, physicians may detect and monitor lesions, ulcers, tumors, and bleeding within the small bowel.
The capsule is equipped with a miniature video camera and light source It travels painlessly through your entire digestive tract. It captures images quickly and sends them to a recording device you wear during the procedure.
And, unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you can move around freely throughout the examination. PillCam is disposable and passes naturally through your body.
